UC Merced doctoral candidate Adekunle “Kunle” Adewole has been selected as a 2026 Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings Fellow.
Adewole was also chosen as one of 18 participants in the Baden-Württemberg International Post Meeting Programme for Young Scientists.
“I keenly anticipate this opportunity to exchange ideas and views with all participants and delegates as we examine one of the major recent advances transforming how we pursue science,” he said.
The first-generation Chemistry and Biochemistry student’s research with Professor Andrea Merg focuses on creating protein-like materials made of small building blocks (peptides) that can be programmed by their sequence to form specific 3D shapes. By harnessing the biological nature of these materials, his work enables applications in medicine and biosensing, particularly in targeted drug delivery.
Adewole said he is proud to represent the campus in such a prestigious academic and research space.
“I cannot wait to meet, learn from and exchange ideas with the minds that have shaped and are currently shaping our pursuit of science,” he said. “I’m excited to connect with all the other young scientists attending from all around the world.”
Adewole acknowledged those who have helped shape his journey: his Ph.D. advisor Merg, Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Education Professor Hrant Hratchian, Professor Christine Isborn and his thesis committee.
“I’m beyond ecstatic at the prospect of such an upcoming transformative experience.” Adewole said, recognizing the University of California Office of the President for sponsoring his trip to the Lindau Conference.
Adewole was also selected for the Merck Next Gen Leaders in Chemistry award. The award recognizes graduate students and postdoctoral fellows for their outstanding contributions to the broader chemistry community through chemical research, advocacy for diversity, equity and inclusion in chemistry, and their potential to be scientific pioneers and innovators. Awardees receive mentorship, career development and an expenses-paid trip to present at a Merck scientific symposium.
“I look forward to the numerous opportunities ahead for growth with this year’s cohort of amazing talent,” he said.
