Research Initiative Launched to Battle Breast Cancer, Emphasize Prevention
The UC’s California Breast Cancer Research Program (CBCRP) launched a new initiative to help fight breast cancer, and is seeking ground-breaking ideas in the field of research.
The Global Challenge to Prevent Breast Cancer aims to advance prevention by encouraging researchers, scientists, advocates and others to develop transformative new ideas.
The challenge is open to individuals and teams with bold ideas. Participants can submit applications in two categories: one for researchers and scientists and the other for advocates (anyone who isn’t a researcher or scientist). Applications from advocates will be judged separately.
Two grand prize winners will be chosen in each category, and each winner will receive $5,000, public recognition and a chance to work with CBCRP to bring his or her research idea to fruition.
Ideas must:
- address primary prevention of breast cancer;
- focus on prevention, not just understanding the causes of breast cancer; and
- be aimed at reducing breast cancer in whole populations, not just groups at highest risk.
Applications must present research concepts that can be implemented in California and can be advanced in a significant way within five years.
Winners will receive cash prizes, feedback from respected researchers, and the opportunity to present their ideas to prominent leaders in the field. The most promising ideas will frame CBCRP’s future funding strategy and will be further developed in California with $15 million in grant funding from the program. Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. Jan. 7, 2019.
The application process is explained in detail online. Information about the challenge, including frequently asked questions and rules . For more information email getinfo@CABreastCancer.org .
