On the heels of Money magazine's impressive rating, UC Merced has risen to the top of another list. The university has claimed the No.1 spot in the nation on Times Higher Education's (THE) "Young University Rankings 2023."

To qualify as a "Young University," a school must be 50 years old or younger. According to its website, THE uses "13 carefully calibrated performance indicators to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons, trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry and governments." The performance indicators are grouped into five areas: teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income.

The rubric used for the "Young University Rankings" is based on the same criteria THE utilizes for its annual "World University Rankings." Overall, UC Merced ranks as the 60th best "Young University" in the world.
