Carter Honored by National Organization of Research Development Professionals

September 15, 2020

Susan Carter, the campus’s former Director of Research Development from 2008 to 2017, has been named to the charter class of the National Organization of Research Development Professionals (NORDP) Fellows, an organization she was instrumental in supporting in its nascent phase during her time at UC Merced.

Carter and her team assisted faculty pursuing major multi- and interdisciplinary team-based research initiatives and facilitated grant submissions by junior faculty prior to moving to the Santa Fe Institute in 2017.

“Susan Carter created the Office of Research Development at UC Merced," Vice Chancellor for Research Emeritus Sam Traina said. "She was deeply committed to enhancing the success and careers of all faculty but particularly those at the beginning of their careers, and she was also deeply committed to obtaining training grants and career development grants for our undergraduate and graduate students.

“All of us owe a debt of gratitude for Susan Carter’s contributions to UC Merced.”

Charter Fellows were selected based on distinctive and sustained contributions to NORDP, ranging from organizational development and growth to fostering a culture of diversity and inclusive excellence to peer network development and mentoring. Carter has been a regular contributor and co-presenter at the annual NORDP conference.
Interim Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development Marjorie Zatz worked with Carter on interdisciplinary institutional grants soon after joining UC Merced as vice provost and graduate dean in 2014.
“Susan was my partner from day one,” Zatz said. “She knew the agencies and what they were looking for and worked with our team in the intellectual development of proposals. Susan’s knowledge and skills were a key element in our success.”
The charter class of NORDP Fellows will be formally recognized during the 2021 NORDP Annual Research Development Conference
