The American Sociological Association (ASA) has honored Professor Laura Hamilton and her co-author with its Distinguished Scholarly Publication Award for their 2013 book, “Paying for the Party: How College Maintains Inequality.”
The book was the product of two years of research that found few college graduates from less-privileged backgrounds realized their dreams of mobility, while the majority from privileged backgrounds remained poised to reproduce their parents’ affluence.
Publication awards honor books and papers that make a significant research impact. The book has drawn national attention and contributed much to the larger discussion of the value of higher education, making Hamilton a key influencer on the subject of inequality in education.
The ASA will formally recognize Hamilton in August at its annual meeting in Chicago.
