MERCED, Calif. - Learning happens well beyond
classrooms and textbooks at the University of California, Merced.
The university’s primary function is that of a research university
and to help community members understand and celebrate that
mission, UC Merced will host its annual Research Week April 7
through 9.
Campus administrators designate Research Week as a time when the
campus community and the general public can examine what campus
researchers are studying and imagine the impact those discoveries
could have.
“Research Week gives us the opportunity to show the community
what drives much of the learning at UC Merced,” said Vice
Chancellor for Research Samuel J. Traina. “It is our way of sharing
and showcasing the work of our outstanding professors, students and
scientists. Research fuels classroom teaching, gives students
invaluable hands-on experiences and contributes to society through
advances in fields such as biomedical research and environmental engineering.”
The week kicks off Tuesday, April 7, with the student poster
competition. Participating students, from freshmen to Ph.D.
candidates, will share their work with peers, professors and the
general public. Prizes will be awarded to the top undergraduate and
graduate poster winners. The undergraduate poster session begins at
10 a.m. and the graduate session at 11 a.m. in the Joseph Edward
Gallo Recreation and Wellness Center Gymnasium. The public is
welcome to attend free of charge.
On Thursday, April 9, the Vital and Alice Pellissier Family
Distinguished Speaker Series will bring its third guest to campus -
UC Berkeley biologist and herpetologist Tyrone B. Hayes. A
professor at UC Berkeley’s integrative biology department, his main
research interest focuses on how environmental changes, such as
exposure to herbicides and pesticides, impacts amphibian
development, growth and reproduction. His lecture, “From Silent
Spring to Silent Night: What Have We Learned?” begins at 6 p.m., in
the Dr. Lakireddy Auditorium on campus. A reception will follow.

Visitors to UC Merced for Research Week events should park in
the Lake Lot near the campus entrance. A parking permit is required
from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Permits cost $2 for
