New UC Students, UC Alumni Invited to Annual Student Send-Off Event
MERCED — The San Joaquin Valley UC Alumni Network will present
its Annual Summer Barbecue on Saturday, August 11 in Merced.
Highlights include a send-off for new UC students from Merced
County and an election of Alumni Network officers for the 2001-02 year.
All University of California alumni, current UC students and
students planning to enroll at UC campuses this fall as freshmen or
first-year transfer students are invited to attend this casual
outdoor affair. New UC students also are encouraged to come with
their parents.
Outreach to future UC students is an important mission of the
Alumni Network, with a particular focus on encouraging more San
Joaquin Valley students to take advantage of a University of
California education, said Stuart Hayden, president of the San
Joaquin Valley UC Alumni Network. This event also allows alumni to
congratulate new UC students, who in turn can connect with alumni
and other students heading off to UC campuses this fall.
In addition to development of current and future UC students,
the Alumni Network provides Valley alumni with social and
professional networking opportunities, as well as information about
the Universitys latest activities and achievements. Members of the
Alumni Network also are involved in promoting the welfare and
development of the University of California and the UC Merced campus.
Alumni Network membership is free and available to all
individuals who have earned at least 12 units of credit from any of
the University of California campuses. Almost 600 UC alumni living
in the San Joaquin Valley are Alumni Network members.
The Annual Summer Barbecue will begin at 6:30 p.m. on August 11
at the home of UC alumni Ed and Karen Spinardi, 3231 North Willow
Run Drive in Merced. The cost per person is $12, with checks made
payable to University Committee Merced. New UC students are welcome
to attend as guests of the Alumni Network.
