MERCED, CA— Summer session is a great way to
get a few extra college units. UC Merced offers courses on campus
that are broadcast via two-way, live videoconferencing to the
educational centers in Bakersfield and Fresno to make learning more convenient.
Students enrolled in summer session through the educational
centers will see and participate in the on-campus courses as they
are happening.
Registration begins today and will continue until June 1.
Students are encouraged to register early. Late registration will
begin June 2 and continue through the end of the second week of
courses, June 29.
There are two regular sessions that are six and eight weeks
long, and a “special summer session” that is seven weeks long,
featuring two courses designed for a high school audience.
Classes start June 18.
UC Merced Summer Session Coordinator Shannon Adamson said last
year’s summer session was popular; a record 97 students attended
courses. But since last year, the UC Merced campus population has
grown; and so has the university’s recognition. Summer classes will
likely be in higher demand this year.
Faculty will teach subjects such as mathematics and chemistry,
writing and psychology, among several other courses to be announced shortly.
“We are really excited to be able to offer such a wide variety
of courses,” Adamson said. “Students who live near our main campus
or centers will have lots of opportunities to continue their studies.”
San Joaquin Valley students admitted to UC Merced or other
universities for the fall 2007 quarter or semester can take summer
courses at UC Merced to get a head start on their college work.
Students who have been attending other colleges can also take
summer session courses,whether they want to satisfy prerequisites
while at home for the summer, get ahead or simply for fun.
In fact, summer session classes are open to anyone at least 18
years old, though high school seniors can also enroll as long as
they have a letter of recommendation from their principal or counselor.
“UC Merced is committed to the San Joaquin Valley and continues
to dedicate itself in providing a quality education to its
residents,” Adamson said.
