Atwater, CA — UC Merced will celebrate an Open House at its newest facility, located at the Castle Airport Aviation and Development Center in Atwater, on Tuesday, April 30, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
“This is a terrific example of the economic revitalization that the University is bringing to not just Merced but to the entire region of the San Joaquin Valley,” says Chancellor Carol Tomlinson-Keasey. “The majority of our team of educators and staff is now housed under one roof, which essentially streamlines our hard work in establishing a world-class research university.”
Both local residents and elected officials will gather at the recently refurbished civil engineering building that was originally built in 1988 as part of the former Castle Air Force Base. To date, over 300 people from throughout the community have already confirmed attendance. The celebration is open to the public.
Open House activities at the new UC Merced complex will range from guided tours of the newly renovated building to presentations of the first three academic buildings that will be constructed on the tenth campus of the University of California, located a few miles northeast of the City of Merced. The Buhach Colony High School Band will provide music while McSwain School students will display their science fair projects.

UC Merced currently employs more than 90 educators and professionals. With the main campus scheduled to open in fall 2004 to serve 1,000 students, UC Merced ultimately will grow to serve 25,000 students over the coming decades. UC Merced also contributes to educational access throughout the entire San Joaquin region via educational and outreach centers in Fresno and Bakersfield, and through the Tri-College Center in Merced. An additional UC Merced center is planned for Modesto.
