Enrollment Open for UC Merced Summer Session Two

Assistance Available through Chancellors Summer Scholarship Program

The registration deadline is fast approaching for San Joaquin Valley students wishing to enroll in the second session of University of California, Merced Summer 2001 courses. August 3 is the final day to apply for all courses in the six-week session scheduled from August 6 through September 14.

In collaboration with UC Davis, UC Merced is offering five general education courses in economics, psychology, sociology and nutrition at its UC Centers in Merced, Fresno and Bakersfield. These courses provide a unique and cost-efficient avenue to earning University of California credit at locations in close proximity to home.

These courses bring the UC experience direct to the Valley, complete with the high quality of instruction and programming available at UC campuses, said UC Merced Interim Director of Academic Programs Claudia Martinez. We are receiving a strong, positive response from students who participated in this summers first set of courses and encourage others to take advantage of this opportunity. Its exciting to consider that these students are among UC Merceds first students — the pioneers.

In addition, Martinez said she is excited that scholarships are still available for students through the UC Merced Chancellors Summer Scholarship Program. One UC Merced summer course and the textbooks required for the courses are provided free of charge to students selected to receive this scholarship.

Courses scheduled are Principles of Microeconomics, General Psychology, Introduction to Sociology, Race Relations and Discoveries and Concepts in Nutrition. Professors and lecturers from UC Davis and UCLA will provide the instruction.

Three to five units of credit are available per course and fees range from $228 to $380.

Eligible for enrollment are students currently enrolled at a UC campus, students admitted to the University for admission this fall and community college students planning to transfer to a UC campus. High school students about to begin their senior year must submit a letter from the school principal or counselor documenting their grade point average and recommending them for college-level study to enroll. Other Valley residents 18 years and older also are welcome to register for the summer courses.

Some courses will be taught in traditional classroom style, while other courses will leverage the latest in technology to maximize student participation via two-way, live videoconferencing.

UC Merced employs approximately 70 educators and professionals at present. Currently being planned, the University's main campus in Merced is expected to open in fall 2005 with 1,000 students. The campus will grow over coming decades to serve 25,000 students. UC Merced has a special mission to serve the San Joaquin Valley and contributes to educational access throughout the entire Valley region via centers in Merced, Fresno and Bakersfield. A UC Merced center will open in Modesto by early 2002.
