Vehicle and Pedestrian Traffic Safety on Campus

October 11, 2018

Dear Campus Community,

We have been working diligently to address some of the side effects of campus growth, while making sure intercampus travel can occur as safely as possible. The increased flow of traffic from cars and pedestrians at the intersection of Muir Pass and Scholars Lane, in particular, has created safety concerns.

In partnership with Transportation and Parking Services (TAPS), Housing, Dining, Design and Construction, Facilities, Risk, Environmental Health and Safety, and the Fire Marshal, we’re making circulation adjustments at the intersection to mitigate these concerns.

Beginning Monday, Oct. 15, barriers will be installed around the intersection of Muir Pass and Scholars Lane to separate pedestrians and bicycle traffic from vehicle and cart traffic. For everyone’s safety, pedestrians, skateboarders and bicyclists should use crosswalks. Vehicle and cart drivers must only enter the intersection when it is clear and safe to do so.

Drivers must:

  • fully stop at the intersection and use turn signals at intersections;
  • watch for cross traffic when turning or entering intersections;
  • drive defensively and follow all rules of the road; and
  • avoid distracting activities — including using a cell phone or adjusting the radio — that may take your attention away from driving.

Safely sharing the roadway is a top priority for everyone. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we continue to focus on the safety of our campus community.

Sincerely,

Chou Her

Chief of Police
