Asa Bradman, a UC Merced professor of public health and environmental systems, was appointed on April 2 to an advisory committee for the California Department of Pesticide Regulation.
The Scientific Prioritization and Review Committee is charged with making recommendations to the department on policies and actions to eliminate adverse health and environmental impacts associated with pesticide use.
Bradman, a member of the university’s Health Sciences Research Institute and Earth Institute, has earned worldwide attention for his research on pesticides and other environmental chemicals. Recent research focused on threats to child development posed by food dyes, which the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has targeted for removal from the food supply.
He is an expert in exposure assessment and epidemiology, focusing on occupational and environmental exposures to pregnant women, children and families in agricultural communities.
Bradman and fellow committee members will advise the Department of Pesticide Regulation with science-based recommendations to:
- Identify pesticide risks to human health and the environment
- Identify gaps in available pesticide risk information
- Propose alternatives to toxic pesticides
- Support research on less toxic products and pest management practices
