Cristián H. Ricci, professor of Iberian and North African literatures at UC Merced, has been selected for an International Senior Fellowship at the College for Social Sciences and Humanities of University Alliance Ruhr in Germany.
The six-month residential fellowship is intended for established scholars in the humanities and social sciences with internationally recognized research profiles.
Ricci, a member of the UC Merced faculty since 2004, will be in residence from March through August 2027. During the fellowship, he will develop his research project, “Peripheral Voices, Shared Borders: Minoritized Literatures within the Global Hispanophone,” in collaboration with Susanne Zepp-Zwirner, professor of Spanish and Hispanic American literature at the University of Duisburg-Essen.
The project places literary traditions from Spain, Latin America, North Africa and their diasporas in conversation together rather than treating them as separate national or regional fields. It asks how writers from historically marginalized and mobile communities rethink borders, identity, migration, memory and belonging across the Spanish-speaking world.
Based in Essen, Germany, the College for Social Sciences and Humanities is an international institute within University Alliance Ruhr. Its Senior Fellowship Programme is designed for scholars with internationally recognized research profiles; up to 20 fellowships are awarded annually.
Working with Zepp-Zwirner during the residency, Ricci will extend his research on Iberian and North African literatures while strengthening international collaboration between UC Merced and University Alliance Ruhr.
