Dear Campus Community,

When we return from Thanksgiving recess, the campus will see visible results of the Merced 2020 Project expansion plan. On Monday, Nov. 27, three major developments will take place:

Phase I of a new campus parking lot south of Bellevue Road will open, representing one of the first deliverables associated with the Merced 2020 Project.

  • There will be two entrances to the lot, one from the intersection of Bellevue and Lake, and the other on northbound Lake Road

  • Until Dec. 16, a temporary path near the round, gray water tank will connect pedestrians to Scholars Lane while a 700-foot semi-permanent path parallel to the recreation field is installed.

  • ADA parking will be on the northern edge of the lot

  • The Lake Road bike path will continue to provide bicycle access to campus during this time.

  • Future enhancements include charging stations for electric vehicles.

The intersection of Bellevue and Lake roads will become a four-way lighted intersection, providing direct access to the new parking lot and future buildings.

  • The signal light will flash red for two weeks as drivers become familiar with the installation.

  • The beginnings of what will become a canopy of Valley Oak trees lining the campus entry way has been planted.

The Evolution Valley and Mammoth Lake parking lots will be fenced and closed to prepare for the building of new classrooms and student enrollment center, and a new transit hub.

  • Lake Lots 1 and 2 will continue to be accessible from Scholars Lane during this time.

Phase 1 of the Bellevue lot will replace parking lost in upcoming construction activity. Phase 2 will be complete by Fall 2020, and will expand campus parking by 60 percent — about 1,500 spaces more than we have right now. The 700-foot pedestrian path connecting the lot to Scholars Lane will be paved and lighted when it opens on Dec. 16. After the semester ends, Lake Lots 1 and 2 will close to begin construction of the future student wellness/counseling buildingand three recreation fields. At that time, the Bellevue lot will be the site of lower campus parking.

We appreciate the patience and support of the campus community as we work to build the future here in the heart of California. Stay informed by visiting the project website. Questions can be emailed to construction2020@ucmerced.edu.
