A Message Regarding Student Kevin Harris

March 24, 2020
Dear Campus Community:

It is with deep sadness that I write to inform you of the death of UC Merced student Kevin Harris as the result of a tragic accident over the weekend.

Our thoughts go out to his family, friends and loved ones during this terrible time.

Kevin was a first-year philosophy major. Coming from Elk Grove, he started at UC Merced last fall. In a recent conversation with his advisor he talked about a renewed dedication to his course work and interest in his field of study. His instructor shared with me the wonderful depth of insight he brought to the classroom discussion. A basketball enthusiast, he would often encourage floormates from Cathedral to join in regular games. His contributions to the campus community will be missed.

We will hold a virtual moment of silence for Kevin at noon, Tuesday, March 31, 2020. I ask that we all set aside a few minutes on Tuesday as we collectively, from across the state, take time to pause and honor Kevin.

During these sad times, it is important to remember resources are available. In addition to supporting each other through our friendships, counseling is available on campus. You can contact Counseling & Psychological Services 24 hours at (209) 228-4266 to schedule an appointment to talk with a counselor over the phone.

Please join us, wherever you are, for the moment of silence next week.

Sincerely,

Charles Nies
Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
