Holiday Curtailment Schedule

October 10, 2019
Dear Colleagues,

During this year’s holiday season, UC Merced will close for seven days from Tuesday, Dec. 24, through Wednesday, Jan. 1. The closure includes four paid holidays (Dec. 24, 25, 31 and and Jan. 1) and three unpaid curtailment days (Dec. 26, 27 and 30).
Employees can use vacation time or (if eligible) compensatory time to cover the unpaid days (curtailment refers to the reduction of normal campus operations). Staff who don’t have enough accrued vacation hours can use up to three days of vacation credits in advance.

The closure dates were chosen in collaboration between campus and Staff Assembly leadership to allow employees nine consecutive days (including the weekend) for winter break.

For represented employees, curtailment days are handled according to contract provisions or collective bargaining agreements. Check with your bargaining unit representative to find out how you’re personally affected.

UC Merced won’t be completely empty during the break. Some job roles are necessary even when the campus is closed. Departments that plan to maintain operations should contact Facilities Management as soon as possible. We ask that employees and units who will work during the closure stay in close communication with their governing vice chancellor in case of emergency.

Email questions to hr@ucmerced.edu ) or call 209-228-8247.

Sincerely,

UC Merced Human Resources
