Chancellor's Dialogue on Diversity and Interdisciplinarity

September 18, 2019
The Chancellor's Dialogue on Diversity and Interdisciplinarity has become a UC Merced tradition. The speaker series brings leading scholars to campus to discuss pressing issues confronting higher education today, explicitly linking our core values through a series of conversations and lectures.
This semester, the Office of the Chancellor is pleased to host Gina Garcia, author of Becoming Hispanic-Serving Institutions: Opportunities for Colleges and Universities.

Garcia will visit campus on Sept. 25 to discuss her book from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the California Room.

A Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) is defined as an institution of higher education with at least 25 percent of its enrolled undergraduates identifying as Hispanic. UC Merced has been an HSI since 2010.

In the book, Garcia provides evidence of how HSIs are unique based on empirical data collected in a study of three Chicago-based HSIs. During her campus talk, Garcia will encourage audience members to think about what Hispanic-serving status means for individual colleges and universities.

Everyone on campus is encouraged to attend. For information on the event, email dacker@ucmerced.edu .
