Campus Safety Update

May 1, 2018

Dear Campus Community,

I am writing to provide an update on a situation that arose over the weekend and caused concern among some members of our campus community Monday. The UC Merced Police Department received reports of social media posts that some interpreted as a threat to the campus. We began investigating the matter immediately and took extra precautions to ensure the safety of the campus community. At no time was the campus in danger in relation to this incident.

We are monitoring the situation very closely, and there is no imminent threat to campus. While the investigation is ongoing, we can confirm that individuals associated with this incident are prohibited from campus until the situation is resolved.

I’d like to take this opportunity to reinforce some important points. First, and most critically, if you see any concerning behaviors, actions, verbal statements or social media posts, please contact the UC Merced Police Department at 209-228-2677 or police@ucmerced.edu. If it is an emergency, please call 911.

If you hear rumors of threats or attacks against any members of our campus community, contact the Police Department immediately to report them. The same is true of rumors posted on social media. Before you comment on a post or share it with your own network, please contact the Police Department. In times like these, it is important that such rumors are taken seriously, reported immediately and investigated fully.

As always, we remain committed to maintaining the safe, welcoming environment, and we appreciate your support and your commitment to our campus and to one another.

Sincerely,

Chou Her
Chief of Police
