Campus Police Offer Holiday Travel Tips for Safety

December 12, 2017

The UC Merced Police Department wants to remind everyone to be extra careful this holiday season while driving, shopping and attending events. Your safety is our main concern.

While driving, please remember to

  • Always wear your seatbelt and slow down during inclement weather.
  • Turn your headlights on and watch for bicyclists and pedestrians.
  • Allow for a safe following distance and avoid distractions.
  • Allow plenty of time to get to your destination.
  • Let someone know where you are going, when you’re leaving and your expected arrival time.
  • Choose well-lit and publicly visible places to make your rest stops.

While out shopping or spending time with loved ones, please remember to think safety first.

  • Lock your doors.
  • Place gifts and personal items of value out of view.
  • Avoid social media postings that may indicate your home is unoccupied.
  • Park in well-lit areas and walk in pairs or in a group.
  • For long trips, share your itinerary with trusted love ones.

If you are traveling, please consider

· Setting your house lights on a timer.

· Using a double lock system for your windows and doors.

· Redirecting mail and/or newspaper service.

Have a great holiday break. If you have any questions, please contact 209-CAT-COPS (228-2677).
