Administrative Leave for Staff Members Affected by the Detwiler Fire

August 9, 2017

A Message From Acting Associate Vice Chancellor of Human Resources David Ellington

Dear UC Merced Staff,

I am pleased to announce that Chancellor Dorothy Leland has authorized additional critical follow-up support for the approximately 50 staff members who were adversely affected by the Detwiler Fire and the mandatory evacuation order that was in effect from July 17 to July 23, 2017.

Consistent with Staff Policy PPSM 2.210 - Absence from Work, Section III.F.1 and applicable bargaining unit agreements, the chancellor immediately authorizes the granting of administrative leave with pay from July 17 to July 21, 2017, for both represented and non-represented staff members who live in the affected areas and were absent from work due to this disaster/declaration of state emergency. This five-day time period is consistent with the mandatory evacuation order issued by the State of California.

As a campus community, we continue to extend our heartfelt thoughts to all staff members whose lives were disrupted by the Detwiler Fire, and we are thankful for Chancellor Leland’s affirmative response and quick action during this unique time of need for our colleagues.

Best regards,

David Ellington
Acting Associate Vice Chancellor of Human Resources
