Campus to Host Training in Life-Saving Tools, Techniques

September 5, 2017

In a life-threatening incident, bystanders have mere moments to act. Thanks to the UC Merced Police Department, American Heart Association and Riggs Ambulance, the general public and campus community have an upcoming opportunity to learn the needed skills to save lives.

On Sept. 11, the campus will host a free hands-only CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) training, equipping participants to effectively use these rescue tools. This presentation is part of the campus’ safety awareness training and begins the introduction of AEDs to the campus. More than 40 defibrillators will be installed on campus, with at least one in each building. Funding secured by the office of Assemblyman Adam Gray has made this, among other safety-related purchases, possible.

"AEDs are an excellent way to save lives,” Sgt. Kari Gomes said. “The training will assist the participants to feel comfortable using the AEDs and to learn where they are located in each building on the campus.”

The training will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 11 in the California Room. Parking is available for a nominal fee in any unmarked space in Lake Lot 2, the Evolution Valley Lot, and Mammoth Lakes Road. Permits can be purchased at pay stations in Lake Lot 2.
